Overwatch 2
first launched October 4th, 2022, with the expectation of an
additional side of the game’s offered modes, story missions. In the past,
Blizzard has made multiple seasonal events to cater to fans craving a story-led
game mode, or one that featured co-op missions to dive into the lore of Overwatch
2. Since its release, the community have yet to see that promise fulfilled,
until today, 8 months later. On June 11th. 2023, Blizzard announced,
Overwatch Invasion, set to release August 10th, 2023. First
talked about in 2019, Blizzard has finally confirmed 3 story missions, taking
place in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Gothenburg.
The
story will focus on the Null Sector wreaking havoc in the cities, at an attempt
to kidnap Omnics for a mysterious purpose. With the current set of characters,
and a possible set of newcomers, including the new support hero, players will
battle against the Null Sector to bring peace to the realm once more, defeating
new enemies such as Artillery and Stalker robots. In addition to the storyline,
a new co-op event will complement the new season, with players exploring more
of King’s Row for a push-bot mission to save Iggy from the Null Sector.
Two
additional modes will also be added: Flashpoint and Hero Collection. Flashpoint
is a new PvP mode for teams to fight and capture 3 points across the map. It
will be available for both quick and competitive play. Hero Collection will
allow players to master their champions through training courses designed to
enhance your skills with each character’s abilities. Upon initial release, it
will only be a small selection of characters, and will be built upon as the
season progresses.
The disappointing part of it all, the experience is stuck behind a paywall. Since it’s transition from Overwatch 1 to Overwatch 2, Blizzard has chosen to redirect its path to microtransactions and cross-over collaborations, with its first being, One Punch Man. With its new system, it’s not surprising to find that their most sought-after feature will be behind a paywall, when they’re succeeding in selling skins for upwards of 20-30 dollars. It’s jarring to think that Blizzard would not treat their fans to a reward of a free expansion, after making continuous failed promises to release such content, by the time of its initial release date back in 2022. The newly offered bundle is 15 dollars, which will include access to the Invasion story missions (both during the season and after), 1,000 Overwatch coins, a new Sojourn skin, and permanent access to Sojourn if players do not already have ownership. In addition to the starter bundle, there is an optional upgrade for 40 dollars, which will add-on the premium battle pass with 20 skips, an additional 1,000 Overwatch coins, and 2 legendary skins, one for Cassidy and one for Kiriko.
Will it be enough to
convince the Overwatch community to spend more money than they already have on
a feature that was promised at launch?
Overwatch 2 is available on PC, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X
